Why We Boycotted Lagos NUJ Election – Raymond Tejumola
I was on ground Thursday, November 26, for the Lagos NUJ Election and I noticed that majority of supporters from your team boycotted the election. Why?
Yes, we decided to boycott the election for various reasons.
What are these reasons?
Before the November 26 election, after series of postponements, the Dr Qasim Akinreti team complained bitterly about the disentrancement of most of our supporters from various chapels of the union in Lagos.
We also expressed our displeasure at the composition of the caretaker committee, which was made up of members from the opposition side.
Did the national secretariat of NUJ in Abuja, being the supervising body, addressed these issues?
No, the national secretariat did not address the issues, but instead went ahead November 26, for the conduct of the election. This is why we felt we should boycott the election.
Though our decision did not stop the election, the committee was not able to attract half of the voters verified to participate in the election.
A total of 865 eligible voters were cleared to participate and vote in the election and only about 450 voted and. So, what happened to the rest?
