After serving for many years as 6th Speaker of Lagos House of assembly, Rt. Hon. Adeyemi Ikuforiji has disappeared from active political terrain. This abrupt change in the Icon’s political life has brought the question-
Where is the Rt. Hon. Ikuforiji now?. However, investigation into the life of the erudite Epe born leader of Lagos parliament showed that he has been embedded in the pursuit and betterment of his academic status.
First, Rt. Hon. Ikuforiji, after serving as Speaker with Masters in Business Administration (MBA) and degree in cybernetic went to university to read law in Nigeria and bagged LLB in law. He was eventually called to the bar in Abuja, and later went to Liverpool Business School, Liverpool, JM University where he bagged PHD Degree in Leadership and Strategy.
Ikuforiji was reputed for his effective leadership quality and strategic planning when he was the speaker Lagos state house of Assembly.
These exceptional qualities won him accolades from Nigerians and foreigners. He remarked “The Assembly is happy at the Supreme Court judgment that invalidated the Federal Government quest to monitor local government expenditure via a law promulgated by the National Assembly”.
He said it is a vindication of the assembly earlier stance by the law passed by the legislators, section 7 of 1999 constitution is very clear on who monitors fund of the council. Ikuforiji declared that state assembly is empowered to make laws on the fund disbursement and perform the oversight functions.
On nation building, the Speaker lauded the efforts of non-governmental organizations (NGO) in transforming socio economic fortunes of Nigeria.
Ikuforiji assumed office as speaker in December 2005, after gaining a general appropriation of all 40 law makers in the house. What is the quality that won him the position of the speaker in a foremost assembly in Nigeria is his honesty and humility. He used to ignite fire of love and comradeship among his colleagues, a team player he is to all law makers.
He carried his colleagues along in decision making. He said Lagos assembly is the house of all Nigerians, particularly Lagosians. Rt. Hon. Sabitun Ikuforiji is a lover of journalists, he extends his hands of friendship to any journalist that pays him visit in his mansion at G.R.A. Ikuforiji once said, on 3rd June 2006, “ Journalists in Nigeria must be encouraged and strengthened to enable them discharge their constitutional responsibilities and challenges effectively”
