The foremost ruler of the largest city in West Africa, Olubadan of Ibadan land, His Imperial Majesty Oba Dr Sen. Moshood Olalekan Balogun has charged youths in the southwest, of Nigeria to take initiatives for regional development. The king made the statement on Friday while receiving the Convener of the Southwest Youth Summit, Rt. Hon. Olumide Fasubaa and his team on a courtesy visit to his palace.
Balogun, who is the 42nd king of the famous city, said that a nation or region that will thrive must engage her vibrant youths in the scheme of things to attain economic prosperity.
He also mentioned that the Southwest Youth Summit billed for next year, would present a good opportunity for leaders of the region to address key issues bothering the region, adding that the youth must also make themselves available for collaborations that promote good governance and youth development.
“I am happy to receive the news of the Summit and I must salute the courage of the organizing team in taking this laudable initiative. We have come a long way in developing our region and we must not forget to acknowledge the efforts of our heroes past and present in ensuring the peace and unity we enjoy today. I will give my support in whatever area that is relevant to the event, and I wish you good luck in setting a good agenda for our region, and Nigeria at large,” he said.
While addressing the king, Convener of the Summit who is also the Deputy Speaker of the Southwest Youth Parliament, Rt. Hon. Olumide Fasubaa acknowledged the critical role of traditional rulers in nation-building.
“We are currently consulting stakeholders ahead of the Summit and we understand that our royal fathers are crucial to regional and national stability. As custodians of our customs, traditions and values, we cannot neglect the immeasurable impacts your present will bring to the discussion. We appreciate the audience you have granted us and as well thank you for your support towards the realization of the Summit,” he said.
The Southwest Youth Summit will serve as a turning point for young people to accomplish the following: Promoting peace in the Southwest region of Nigeria, equipping youths with the knowledge to build a sustainable society, and mentoring young minds to achieve greatness, among others.
