Magu Remains In Detention As Operatives Search Homes In Abuja

The embattled Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mr. Ibrahim Magu is still being detained by the Police Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) in Abuja, after appearing for two consecutive days before the Presidential Panel investigating his conduct as head of the anti-graft agency, following his indictment for alleged graft and insubordination by the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami, SAN.

THEWILL gathered that security operatives executed search warrants both at Magu’s personal home in Karu district of Abuja and his official residence in the highbrow Maitama district of the city.

The operatives did not remove anything from the homes, according to multiple reporting on the development.

The investigative panel headed by a retired justice of the court of appeal, Ayo Salami, was constituted by President Muhammadu Buhari following Mr. Malami’s complaint.

The President Tuesday ordered Mr. Magu to temporarily step down pending the conclusion of the investigations because the allegations were serious.

THEWILL had exclusively reported on June 21, 2020, that Mr. Malami urged President Buhari to pick a retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Sani Usman, who the President had already vetted for the job as new Chairman of the EFCC.

In the memorandum to the president seeking Magu’s removal, Mr. Malami also recommended two others — the FCT Commissioner of Police, Mr. Bala Ciroma, who had previously served as the EFCC Head of Operations, and a retired Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG, from Kebbi State – as replacement for Mr. Magu.

Mr. Magu has been on the job in acting capacity since 2015 with the President’s support following the senate’s rejection of his nomination twice.
