LSHA Approves University of Science and Technology

Lagos State House of Assembly has on Monday passed a resolution establishing Lagos State School of Science and Technology.

This followed the submission of the Chairman House Committee on Science and Technology, Hon. Owolabi Taiwo. Hon. Taiwo submitted that the house has deliberated on a law to establish Lagos State University of Science and Technology during a public hearing at the House of Assembly.

The Committee therefore recommended that the stakeholders advised that the institution must liaise with international institution for research and provide facilities for learning to enable students take advantage of education without discrimination.

He also said that the university should develop academic programme leading to award of Diploma and degree and produce men and women with capacity for research into the indigenous technology, produce vocational education, promote scholarship for advanced research and promote cultural heritage under activities for technological University of higher standard.

Hon. Owolabi Taiwo also submitted that the senate of the university should formulate academic policy for appointment, regulates university examination and admission. He added that the duties of academic staff are to promote and administer extra moral studies.

He added that local government should contribute 2 percent to tertiary institutions owned by the states, adding that a common zeal of the school shall be received as evidence.

It was also disclosed that the Vice Chancellor must be a professor with 7 years academic leadership with clear vision for development of university. Hon. Rotimi Olowo subsequently moved a motion that the recommendation of the committee should be adopted as resolution of the house.

Nevertheless, the Deputy Speaker Hon. Eshinlokun Sanni who stood in for the speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashuru Obasa thanked the committee for their good work and directed the clerk, Biliamin Onafeko, to do the needful.
