Civil Liberties Organization in conjunction with Masses Education Against Crime Initiative (MEACI), in a press statement issued yesterday explained how a police constable was allegedly murdered by suspected serial killers around Sango 0ta area of Ogun state.
Yemi Enitan and Olusesan Joseph, Ogun CLO chairman and secretary respectively in that statement said one Jelili Ismaila, Bankole Amidu Moses Proboye and Elijah Samson along Dalemo Sango Ota Ogun state, allegedly carried out the act on September, 13, 2020
According to the statement, as a matter of urgency, some members of the family of one of the suspects in the above subject matter, Bankole Amidu to be précised rushed to our Owode Yewa office to on the 14th of September, 2020 to intimate us on the arrest of their son who just buried his father barely a week ago and his colleagues among whom is a deaf and dumb named Moses Proboye on the allegation of murder of a young Police Officer who was on Escort with a Senior Police Officer.
Our organization believes so much in ‘audi alteram patem’ (hearing from both sides) therefore, we immediately moved to the Sango Divisional Police headquarter on the 14th of September, 2020 to inquire from the police what really happened.
A Police officer (name withheld) gave us an account of what happened, (you know, it will always be in favour of the Police, or what do you expect). This account given by the Police was what they reported to the press.
This same day, we also moved to the scene of the incident to hear from the eyewitnesses, but it was a different story version with a little similarity
During the course of our investigation, we found out that the Police Escort and the Senior officer’s car were in a high speed, blowing serene from Sango ota, going towards Dalemo toll gate when they nearly ran into the truck in question (we all know how these security convoy moves and blow Cyrene when on a journey as this is not the first time government officials convoy will be doing that and have often resulted to fatal accident due to their overspeeding with syrene). The driver of the truck, we gathered , and other vehicles were thrown into pandemonium , so everyone was clearing off road.
As a result of this pandemonium, the Escort could not control their speed and they nearly ran into the truck.
The truck driver, Jelili swerved from culvert to culvert just to avoid hitting crushing the Escort vehicles that were about running into the truck until he hit his tyre on an object that bursts the tyre.
As a result of the bursts, the driver came down to complain to the Escort what confusion they caused and asked for compensation for the replacement of his tyre, while this was going on, the hoodlums around the area popularly called ‘AMOTAKU’ came out of their abode to attack the Police Escort for driving dangerously.
There is no gain saying the fact that the deceased Policeman was attempting to protect his boss from being attacked by the hoodlums, so he tried to shoot at the air, but the hoodlums quickly attacked him and collected the magazine attached to the riffle and then beat him mercilessly. During this scenereo, the truck driver and his motorboys had to run for their dear lives so they wont be attacked by the hoodlums who often stopped truck drivers carrying load to extort money from them each time they pass through the area.
After the crisis calmed, the truck driver abd his motorboys came to fix their tyre not knowing that life of a Police officer was taken during the free foer all fight. If they were aware, do you think they will come back to fix the tyre?.
As they were fixing the tyre, a team of Policemen from sango division came around to arrest the poor driver and his motorboys among whom is Bankole Amidu .
Gentlemen of the Press, we strongly believe that since a Policeman’s life is involved in this case, the Nigeria Police will surely attach sentiment into their report because they are the one to investigate and prosecute. We know that since the real culprit are nowhere to be found, they will cook all interesting stories to make sure the driver and his motorboys suffer for the offence committed by the hoodlums.
In conclusion, we want to categorically say here that:
- It was not the driver nor did his motorboys invite the thugs as claimed by the police in their report to the Press on the 15th September, 2020
- It was not the driver and his motorboys that beat the police officer to death
- None of the suspects attempted to burn the Escort vehicle as claimed by the Police when visited the state SCID Eleweran
- On our visit to the state command, we discovered that the suspects have been beating mercilessly by the Police, and this is against section 34 of the constitution of the federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) and anti-torture Act.
We also want to know whether the federal government policy on the blowing of cyrene by officials who are not governors or president is still in operative, because this was the genesis of the whole problem
However, our organization has written to the Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command in respect of the incident and urge him to critically look into the matter so as not to unjustly prosecute the suspects as no one should be made to suffer for the offence committed by another person, hence the saying ‘ it is better for ninety-nine accused persons to escape justice than to convict one innocent person’
We should also note that it is a trite law that if there is a doubt in an allegation against a suspect, the judgement is always in favour of such suspect.
On behalf of the civil Liberties Organization and Masses Education Against Crime Initiative, we sincerely appreciate you nin advance for publiushing this story as soon as possible so that the whole world will not be put into confussion base on the report of the Police to the press and not to also prosecute the innocent people for such an offence which is not bailable and attracts capital punishment.
At this juncture, we want to condole the Nigeria Police and the family of the deceased officer that the Lord grand them the fortitude to bear the loss and grant the dead an eternal rest
