FIWON Empowerment Cooperative Attracts Foreign Attention, Partnership – Comrade Adeoti Adebayo

The cooperative society for the empowerment of domestic workers across various states in Nigeria, packaged by the Federation of Informal Workers’ Organization, FIWON, has attracted the attention and partnership of various foreign agencies in the last one month, www.csomedia.com.ng authoritatively reveals.
Comrade Adeoti Adebayo, President, FIWON Multipurpose Cooperative Society, in an interview said the society has been on for a long time rendering humanitarian services to domestic workers, comprising cleaners, gardeners, house-keepers, security guards, drivers, etc.
According to him, in Nigeria with a population of about 203 million people, informal workers, also known as self-employed workers make up over 80% of the population, hustling daily for survival, even with government insensitivity to their plights.
His words: “These workers are not paid pensions, harassed by government and private individuals, firms, raped, maimed or even killed, while the payment of their salaries are subjected to the whims- and- caprices of those who hired them”.
But, with as low as N1000 domestic workers will register to make daily contributions for six months and either collect their money or apply for a loan at the end of the period, he said.

Speaking further, Adebayo said over the years, the services rendered by FIWON cooperative society to domestic workers in Nigeria, has attracted the attention and partnership of officials of Women In Informal Employment and Globalizing and Orgnaising, WIGO, who arrived the country last month on a research and partnership mission with the society.
Gbenga Komolafe, National Secretary of FIWON said the cooperative society also train domestic workers on human and workers’ rights, facilities a multipurpose credit and savings scheme, geared towards pensions, health insurance, mortgage and other services, both off-lice and electronically, provides legal aid with human right groups to the workers, among other services.
