ATM Fraud Alert : Mr. Adam the Ex-Unity Bank manager, jailed for N11m for the period of one year
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s Maiduguri Zonal Office, EFCC, has secured the conviction of Adam Kaka Adam, a former banker, who was sentenced to one year in prison by Judge Ibrahim Jauro of the Yobe State High Court in Damaturu.
On one count of fraud to the tune of N11, 657,500.00, the convict was charged.
Adam, a former Vault Room and Automated Teller Machine (ATM) service manager at Unity Bank Plc. The Damaturu Branch, Yobe State, allegedly diverted the said amount that was supposed to be fed to the branch’s ATM.
The count reads: “That you, Adam Kaka Adam, while being the Branch Service Manager of Unity Bank Plc Damaturu, Yobe State, in charge of Vault Room and Automated Teller Machine (ATM) sometimes within the jurisdiction of this Honorable Court in the year 2017 at Damaturu, Yobe State, dishonestly took the sum of N11,657,500.00 (Eleven Million Six Hundred and Fifty Seven Thousand, Yobe State) only being the property of Unity Bank Plc without its consent and with intention of permanently depriving it of the said sum and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Sections 286(1) and 287 of the Penal Code Law, Laws of Yobe State of Nigeria respectively .”
The convict pleaded not guilty to the charge. The prosecution called seven witnesses during the trial and submitted numerous exhibits to support the case against the defendant.
Justice Jauro found him guilty of the crime as charged during the delivery of the judgment on Monday.
The convict, however, begged for leniency and urged the jury to temper justice with mercy.
The defendant’s lawyer, Mukhtar Ali Ahmed, told the court that Adam had previously been convicted by Federal High Court Justice Isa Hamman Dashen of Damaturu for criminal misappropriation.
Consequently, Justice Jauro sentenced Adam to one year in prison with an option of a fine of N100, 000.00.
